How to Prepare for Your Doctor’s Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Doctor’s Appointment

A little preparation before a doctor’s appointment can make the consultation more useful for both you and your GP – helping you get clearer answers and making sure nothing important gets forgotten in the moment.

Write down your symptoms beforehand

Note when symptoms started, how often they occur, what makes them better or worse, and anything else you’ve noticed. It’s easy to forget details once you’re in the room, so having them written down helps.

List your current medication

Bring a list of any medication, supplements or treatments you’re currently using, including dosages. This helps your doctor avoid interactions and understand your full health picture.

Prepare your questions

If there’s something specific you want to ask – about a diagnosis, treatment options, or a referral – write it down beforehand so it doesn’t get lost in the conversation.

Bring relevant documents

If you have previous test results, referral letters or a medical aid card, bringing these along can save time and help your doctor make a more informed assessment.

Arrive a few minutes early

Arriving with a little time to spare, especially for a first visit, gives you a moment to settle in and complete any necessary paperwork without feeling rushed.
