Deciding whether a symptom warrants a doctor’s visit can be difficult, especially when it’s mild or intermittent. While every situation is different, there are some general patterns that suggest it’s worth booking a GP consultation rather than waiting it out.
Symptoms that persist longer than expected
A headache, cough or stomach upset that lasts more than a few days without improving is a reasonable reason to be assessed, even if it doesn’t feel severe.
Symptoms that keep coming back
Recurring issues – whether it’s frequent headaches, repeated digestive discomfort, or ongoing fatigue – are worth investigating rather than treating each episode in isolation, since a GP may spot a pattern you can’t see from the inside.
Unexplained changes in your body
Unexpected weight changes, ongoing tiredness, changes in appetite, or anything that feels genuinely different from your normal baseline is worth mentioning to a doctor, even if you’re not sure it’s significant.
When in doubt, ask
You don’t need to be certain something is wrong to book a consultation. Part of a GP’s role is helping you work out whether a symptom needs treatment, monitoring, or simply reassurance.
